Description
Brown Books Publishing Group is seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Marketing & Publicity to lead campaigns across our diverse catalog of adult and children’s titles, including books published under Brown Books Kids.
This role is ideal for a seasoned publishing professional with 8–15+ years of experience developing and executing successful book marketing and publicity campaigns who is excited by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within an entrepreneurial independent publisher.
The Director of Marketing & Publicity will lead strategy from positioning and planning through publication and long-term audience growth, while building processes, managing internal and external resources, and working closely with authors, booksellers, media, and industry partners to bring books successfully into the world.
- Manage all aspects of marketing and publicity campaigns across Brown Books titles and imprints, including adult trade books and children’s books.
Develop and execute strategic launch plans for frontlist titles, priority books, and author platforms. - Build integrated campaigns spanning media outreach, podcasts, influencers, social media, events, awards, reviews, partnerships, and audience development.
- Lead publicity strategy, including pitching and securing national and regional media across TV, print, radio, podcasts, digital, and online outlets.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with journalists, producers, booksellers, librarians, reviewers, industry organizations, and other publishing partners.
- Advise authors on positioning, branding, audience growth, discoverability, and long-term visibility strategies.
- Collaborate closely with editorial, production, sales, distribution, and leadership teams to maximize each book’s market potential.
- Manage and grow a team of marketing and publicity professionals, freelancers, agencies, and outside partners.
- Establish scalable processes, reporting systems, campaign workflows, and best practices for the department.
- Identify new opportunities to increase awareness, readership, and sales across the Brown Books catalog.
- Represent Brown Books at author events, industry gatherings, meetings, and external functions.
Requirements
- 8–15+ years of experience in book publishing marketing, publicity, author promotion, or audience development.
- Demonstrated success developing and executing book marketing and publicity campaigns.
- Experience managing direct reports, freelancers, agencies, vendors, or external partners.
- Established relationships with media contacts across TV, radio, print, podcasts, digital, and online outlets.
- Strong understanding of trade publishing, bookselling channels, media relations, and current audience-development strategies.
- Experience working with a wide range of book categories preferred, including nonfiction, lifestyle, business, children’s, and other commercial publishing areas.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to develop compelling pitches, messaging, and campaign materials.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple campaigns, priorities, and deadlines.
- Creative and strategic thinker with strong problem-solving skills.
- Entrepreneurial mindset and willingness to work across strategy, leadership, and execution.
