Description

Publishers Weekly, a forward-thinking media company that covers the international book publishing and bookselling industries, is looking for a correspondent to cover the religion publishing sector. Founded in 1872, PW is dedicated to delivering high-quality journalism and fostering engagement with our audience through a dynamic website, ten email newsletters, a weekly print magazine, and an extensive presence across various social media platforms.

Position Overview:

We are seeking a skilled correspondent to cover the religion publishing beat. You will research, assign, and write articles about religion publishing, including market trends, profiles, interviews, title round-ups, book deals, and more. The religion correspondent will collaborate with PW’s news, feature, and book reviews staff, and will be responsible for our twice-monthly Religion BookLine email newsletter as well as six packages in print per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Cover the religion publishing market: You’ll cover market shifts, book trends, publishing deals, and the people making waves in the business. We cover books and publishers from all faith and spiritual traditions, fiction and nonfiction.

  • Contribute to news and feature sections: Collaborate with the news, feature, and book reviews teams to ensure comprehensive coverage of the religion publishing sector, identifying story ideas and contributing diverse perspectives.

  • Oversee a semi-monthly email newsletter: PW Religion Bookline is a must-read email newsletter for anyone involved in religion publishing. It features a mix of news, features, interviews, and reviews.

  • Attend industry events and conferences: Network with industry players, attend relevant events, and build relationships to stay informed about current trends and developments.

  • Maintain awareness of broader publishing trends: Understand the overall publishing landscape and how it intersects with the religion publishing market.

  • Identify and pitch story ideas: Seek out newsworthy information, identify story angles, and pitch compelling ideas.

  • Meet deadlines consistently: Adhere to deadlines and deliver high-quality work that meets PW's editorial standards.

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of the publishing industry: Experience working in publishing or a related field, with an understanding of industry processes, players, and trends is a big plus.

  • Proven track record of writing engaging and informative articles: Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise, and well-researched articles with a strong grasp of grammar and style, identify relevant sources, and conduct insightful interviews.

  • Experience covering religion or spirituality: Knowledge of major religious traditions, current events, and issues in the religious landscape is a plus.

This correspondent position is paid a monthly stipend plus payment per article written or edited. It is not a full-time staff position. Any work travel costs will be included.

This position pays $500/month on a retainer, plus $.50 cents/word per writing assignment.

Interested candidates should submit a resume, cover letter, compensation requirement, and three clips to hr@publishersweekly.com. Applications without a compensation requirement will not be considered.
