SUMMARY

This role acts as the publicity lead for VIZ Media’s trade book line, which publishes a diverse roster of titles including fiction, non-fiction, illustrated books, and graphic novels. Reporting to the Director of Public Relations, the successful candidate will develop, plan and implement publicity campaigns to maximize exposure for authors and their books and ensure designated objectives are met.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  1. Close collaboration with the Editorial Director and Executive Editor to set priorities and strategize campaigns on both a per title and property/brand basis.
  2. Manages media relations activities and campaigns, working in concert with key in-house teams as well as authors, licensing partners, agents, and booksellers.
  3. Cultivates new media outlet relationships and manages ongoing connections with key members of the press. Expands the media contact database.
  4. Identifies opportunities, generates stories and pitches, and secures story placement with top national and regional TV, print, radio, and online media.
  5. Executes and implements logistics and details for author appearances at multi-city book tours, trade shows, book festivals, junkets, and other events.
  6. Crafts compelling and creative publicity materials (press releases, press kits, backgrounders, etc.).
  7. Monitors, analyzes and communicates PR results for wider distribution internally and externally.
  8. Manages interview requests and fulfills digital asset and review copy requests.
  9. Manages the trade book PR budget.

In addition to these responsibilities, performs other activities as assigned and required.

Requirements

MINIMUM ABILITY, SKILL AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Knowledge of the Publishing industry is a MUST.
  • Proven track record of planning and executing successful public relations campaigns at both a local and national level.
  • Strong relationships with both local and national trade and consumer media outlets.
  • Experience in acting as a company spokesperson; comfortable and skilled in both broadcast and print media interviews.
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills with the proven ability to write effective and creative media releases and other content.
  • Ability to adjust to shifting priorities, and rapid change.
  • Ability to communicate and interact professionally with culturally diverse clients, providers, and staff.
  • Ability to work effectively in a small organization with an emphasis on teamwork.
  • Must be proactive, detailed-oriented, well-organized and able to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Proficiency with computer usage, including email, Internet, and standard software.
  • Ability to work legally in the United States.
  • Ability to live in/commute to the San Francisco Bay Area.
  • MUST be able to travel as needed.

MINIMUM PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND EDUCATION

  • 5-8 years of relevant business experience
  • Media relations experience REQUIRED
  • Prior experience with publishing REQUIRED
  • Prior experience managing and leading events STRONGLY PREFERRED
  • Equivalent of Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university (Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Relations or similar related degree) with a record that demonstrates suitable preparation for this position

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Approximately 90% of time spent on the job involves the use of a video display terminal; therefore, must be able to sit for extended periods and to utilize standard ergonomics practices. When not traveling for events, primarily works in an office environment, requiring the following activity: lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 35 pounds, kneeling, bending. Must be able to use standard office equipment such as copiers and faxes.

Requires periodic domestic airline travel to attend meetings and other events. Ability to carry small amounts of consumer material on business trips necessary. Onsite at events, lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 35 pounds, kneeling, and bending will be required.

OTHER INFORMATION

Employees must adhere to all applicable VIZ Media policies and procedures. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Willingness and ability to work non-standard business hours, such as nights and weekends, on an as-needed basis are required. Employees must be able to cope effectively with deadlines and multiple demands.
